Sari Pashmina

The Story

Colourful vintage sari pashminas are a recent addition to Coastal Gallery’s selection of gifts. The pashminas are made by women in small villages in rural India. Trained by more experienced craftswomen, the women can work from home, earn money to look after their families, and support each other.

Each pashmina is made from two vintage saris, stitched together by the traditional Kantha stitch. This is a straight running stitch that adds strength and a distinctive colour detail to each unique pashmina.

Azzi Fragrance Collection

The Perfumer’s Art

In collaboration with respected Swedish film director Jonas Åkerlund, Azzi Glasser created Ditch for The Perfumer’s Story to capture the unique essence of Åkerlund’s art in sensorial form. A fresh take on dark drama, water and green grass notes punctuate the top, while a touch of calone provides a hint of ozonic green urban atmosphere. Boasting an astounding longevity, notes of woods are blended with patchouli, vetivert and oud to give an earthy, dirty accord which is set off by a rich, church-esque heart of frankincense and myrrh.

Commenting on Ditch, Glasser said; “Jonas Åkerlund is a walking inspiration. Being such a big fan of his incredible work and unique creative direction I was thrilled when he wanted to collaborate with me on composing a fragrance together. Jonas and I spent many hours discussing his vision of the ‘Ditch’ and as he talked, I was silently formulating in my head and through my nose the different ingredients that would be mixed together to make the various accords to then create the end story of the ‘Ditch’.

The Royal Academy of Arts is an independent, privately funded institution led by eminent artists and architects whose purpose is to promote the creation, enjoyment, and appreciation of the visual arts through exhibitions, education, and debate. The Royal Academicians are all practicing painters, draughtsmen, engravers, printmakers, sculptors, and architects and are elected by their peers. Coastal Gallery has selected designs by Sir Terry Frost RA, Michael Craig-Martin CBE RA, Sandra Blow RA and Grayson Perry CBE RA.

Sandra Blow

Blow was at the forefront of the Abstract Art Movement in Britain during the 1950’s. She won the Guggenheim International Award in 1960 and was awarded the second prize at the third John Moores Exhibition at the Walker Art Gallery in 1961.

Terry Frost

Terry Frost was widely recognised as one of the leading British abstract artists of his generation. Born in Leamington Spa in 1915 Terry Frost discovered his talent for painting as a prisoner of war in the Second World War. After returning to England Frost attended Camberwell School of Art. He went on to teach at Bath Academy of Art, Leeds University, and Newcastle University before being appointed Professor of Painting at the University of Reading. Terry Frost’s career as an artist spanned six decades and his work is held in museums and galleries worldwide.

Michael Craig-Martin

Michael Craig-Martin was born in Dublin in 1941 and educated in the USA, where he studies at Yale University. He returned to Europe in the mid-1960’s and was a key figure in the first generation of British Conceptual artists.
