We were thrilled to take delivery yesterday of Chris Whittaker’s most recent exquisite painting. We still remember seeing Chris’s artwork for the first time, and were astounded by his eye for detail and the scale at which he works. Much of Chris’s work is inspired by ‘the messy bits of nature that go unnoticed or just get stepped over’ - from windblown hawthorn bushes on Lymington sea wall to daisies growing on Chris’s lawn. In 2012, Stewart Mechem and Bev Saunders became co-owners of Coastal Gallery, Lymington. Both with backgrounds in the fashion and design world, Stewart and Bev have always been particularly interested in featuring contemporary abstract artwork. The Coastal Gallery collection, now in two stunning galleries(see images above) at Palais des Vaches, Lower Exbury Farm, Exbury, includes work by Martyn Brewster, Neil Canning, Gohar Goddard, Joanne Last, Stephen Powell and, most recently, renowned artist Felice Hodges. Born in New York, Felice first gained a scholarship to the Royal College of Music in London and trained as a pianist. She then returned to America to study fine art at Cornell University. Felice now works from studios in London and Dorset, and her work is in private and public collections nationally and internationally. Felice’s wonderful colour combinations, unexpected compositions and subtle mark making are often inspired by her love of music, from Debussy and Ravel to jazz and Joni Mitchell. The Coastal Gallery at Palais des Vaches collection of stunning contemporary artwork also includes paintings by renowned abstract artist, Neil Canning. Based near St Ives, Neil’s work is inspired by the Cornish coastline. He captures the essence and energy of the sea in vibrant blues, turquoises and greens, often with bold sweeps of white and touches of orange and yellow. Neil has an honorary degree from the University of Exeter in recognition of his contribution to contemporary art in Britain, and his work is in national and international collections. A belated happy 2026 to all our artists, friends and customers. Our first Coastal Gallery at Palais des Vaches post of 2026 features the iconic and much-loved ‘Renaissance Woman’, Molly Parkin. Molly was a multi-faceted, multi-coloured human kaleidoscope. From the Welsh Valleys to bohemian Chelsea, she rebelled against the staus quo in her own inimitable fashion. Molly’s unique contribution to art, design and popular culture included redefining British fashion and style in the 1960s, writing celebrated novels and memoirs and, most recently, painting, her first love. Molly’s paintings are a riot of electric blues, pinks, purples and greens with touches of gold, silver and sunshine yellow. Many pieces have wonderfully evocative titles -‘John Lennon is not Dead’ or ‘Television Personality’. Molly’s art reflected the vibrancy of her life - a life lived in technicolour until January 5th 2026. Her family and friends, including Stewart, will miss her greatly. Coastal Gallery is honoured to feature several of Molly Parkin’s jewel-like paintings.
